In wandering the busy halls at Embedded World in Nuremberg a few weeks ago, it was plain to see how the evolution in the embedded market is really shaping up.

Over the past few years, I’ve heard end-users asking for more complete solutions. And at events like this, it is apparent that system integrators, hardware vendors, and software developers are consolidating efforts to meet their needs.

So what have we all learned? Agility is key to reacting quickly to evolving market trends. Many exhibitors at this event really demonstrated their ability to deliver both relevant and innovative solutions. Performance continues to rise while power envelopes and physical sizes continue to fall, enabling even more innovative markets and applications. Small form factors continue to shrink while providing unprecedented levels of performance and features at power levels that were unimaginable only a few years ago.

We know software is integral in tying everything together for any market application. In considering this, I can’t help but think of Steve Ballmer’s famous, “Developers! Developers! Developers!” chant.

But behind the scenes of the software development work, there is a level of enablement supported by hardware solutions. As an AMD employee, I find it very exciting to see how our products and technologies – in coalition with our software ecosystem partners – are contributing to and helping enable this important embedded evolution.

Higher levels of integration are being achieved while maximizing every ounce of performance a platform can offer. This is achievable though a tight hardware/software relationship, the importance of which becomes increasingly evident in the heterogeneous computing era and with the continued evolution of the embedded industry.
